Beautiful, as all your work. The red balloon looks amazing above the grey background.

Hi -

Love the black and white with the shot of red! It reminds me of that older French film "The Red Balloon." It seems we watched that every year in elementary school - must've been the only film in the library.

Anyway, great idea once again.

Diane,
I was thinking of that film when I decided to use black and white with just the red of the balloon.. I have portrayed the balloon with a note attached to it because the children of one of my closest friends, who has passed away, release balloons into the sky with messages attached for her..

the starkness/(hardness?) of the buildings and the softness of the girl and the balloon... beautiful...

i like the slight redness of the cheeks... leetal detail... i don't know if anyone's noticed it... :P

Love it!!

I like the idea of releasing a balloon with a message attached - very symbolic.

Oh funny! It's similar to mine.

You've done a great job. I find myself looking at yours weekly.

It's lovely... It makes me pause and contemplate...

I really appreciate the very decision of you having only the balloon colored. It works brilliantly. Also I guess since the buildings are so bare and look abandoned,I am constantly forced to look at the ballon as a sign of life, perhaps.wonderful.

I love this Kathy! The contrast between the geometric buildings and the round balloon works so well :) Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog, I felt my blue background was making me feel even colder!x

There is something so whimsical, so poignant and so utterly compelling about the solitary little girl and her red balloon. What a truly beautiful illo!

Very nice. This reminds me of a movie we used to watch in grammar school.

I love the grey and red contrast Kathy... always very poetic, makes me think of the little girl in Schindler's List. How sweet yet sad that your late friend's children send her balloons, perhaps she is the girl in the building awaiting the message they send?

I am a fanatical fan of black and white with color added, to make them both stand out. I find that closer attention is paid to a piece such as this. It also begs for the story behind it! I love coming to see what you come up with every week and I am never disappointed and always inspired! Fabulous, just fabulous!

{slaps hands down} I think I'm just for a loss of words. Your work is just so stunning. It really gets you thinking about the story behind the image. Do you create stories in your head as you draw? Because it sure does look like it. Whats so fantastic about this piece is you could use it in children's books, but also for a magazine article. True illustration Kathy, beautiful!

Great image. The stark backdrop with a solitary character works really well with the flash of colour from the balloon. Very atmospheric.

I love your illustration with the grayscale and the red balloon. As if her world is gloomy without her balloon. Very wonderful.

Poignant, yet uplifting. How do yo do it!? Also love the shock of red against the grayscale. Simply magical!
